Curriculum

We are legally required to follow the statutory national curriculum which sets out in programmes of study, on the basis of key stages, subject content for those subjects that should be taught to all children. We are also required to make provision for a daily act of collective worship and must teach religious education to all children, for which we use content from the Hampshire Syllabus, Living Difference.

The national curriculum however only provides an outline of core knowledge, around which we are able to develop exciting and stimulating lessons, to promote the development of knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum. We consider our curriculum to be one of the key strengths of Alverstoke Junior School and this was recognised by Ofsted when they inspected in December 2012.

We take a thematic, integrated approach to the curriculum which provides a clear context and purpose for learning.  Across each year group there are a number of themed units ranging from two to six weeks in length, thus ensuring variety and engagement in learning. Each unit begins with a ‘hook’ to engage the children and the learning leads towards an ‘outcome’, which is shared with parents. Each unit also has an aspect of ‘home-learning’, either optional or compulsory, which is detailed in the curriculum newsletter. We encourage both children and parents to participate in the home learning, which may take the place of regular maths and English homework but is sometimes additional.

Parents receive a copy of the curriculum newsletter for their child’s year group every time they begin a new unit. The newsletter is also uploaded onto our website. This details the learning that will be taking place in the ‘lead’ and ‘applied’ curriculum subjects. Other subjects may be taught discretely and therefore may not feature on the newsletter. Dates for any upcoming outcomes are also listed on the curriculum newsletter as well as the school’s weekly newsletter and website.
