Music at Alverstoke Church of England Junior School

We have lots of fun making music at Alverstoke and pride ourselves on being a school that celebrates and nurtures musical talents of all kinds. We link many of our music lessons to our themed units and perform at many of the year group outcomes. We have a wide selection of instruments to play in our ‘hands on’ class music sessions, including a drum kit and keyboards. We have been very involved in the successful BBC Ten pieces initiative this year- check out the link to find out more about these amazing resources.

We offer specialist tuition in brass, drums, piano, woodwind and violin. These places are very popular, with 100+ pupils currently having lessons. These cost £40 per term. If you wish to be placed on our waiting list, contact Rose Cain

Places are currently available for brass instruments.

Friday Choir

The school choir, on Friday mornings at 8.25am, is open to all and completely free!  – Half an hour of singing before school sets you up for a great day. We sing just about anything and work towards numerous performing opportunities at school, in St. Mary’s church and in the local community over the year.

Choir highlights this year included singing a selection of World War I songs as part of the to the Gallipoli Commemorations on 25th April at the Gosport Cricket Club; and finishing on a high on July 18th as part of our choir performed Zadok the Priest as part of the BBC Ten Pieces choir at the Royal Albert Hall in a Proms Concert!

Many school singers are recruited and support the St. Mary’s church choir or progress to our invite only lunchtime chamber choir. Coming in the Autumn Term – Boyzalone – a singing group with no girls allowed! Fridays at 12.15pm

Our school orchestra rehearses on Monday mornings from 8.20am – our instrumentalists are invited to join as soon as they have reasonable playing and music reading skills. Players gain skills and satisfaction from the challenge of performing with other musicians. We have a wide and lively repertoire and many of our players go on to play in Hampshire Music service Ensembles. On July 13th we went ‘on tour’, to Alverstoke Infants, performing and answering questions about our instruments.

Drama Club

We run a successful and very popular drama club with an average annual membership of 75. Again, open to all, we work towards a series of performances at Thorngate Hall at the end of the Spring Term. This gives pupils an opportunity to develop their acting, singing and performance skills. Drama club runs from October to March on Thursday after school. There is a joining fee of £35 which covers rehearsal and production costs, costumes etc. Look out for a letter in the Autumn Term. Check out the drama tab to find out about previous productions.

Fife Club

Mrs Gentile, our HMS music teacher is offering a new club on Thursdays at 10.30am.  The fife is a small flute; a perfect starter instrument for budding woodwind players. This costs £20 per term, with instruments costing an additional £10 which can be purchased through the school.

If you need any further information or advice about music at our school please contact the school office or Mrs Cain
