Travel to School

Whilst the responsibility for pupils travelling to and from school rests with the parents, we encourage walking, scooting or cycling at least part of the journey as this is beneficial to health and the environment and reduces congestion around the school entrances. We work with the School Travel Team and Living Streets and have a Travel Plan.

We recognise that not all pupils are able to walk from home and we encourage Park and Stride to establish a walking zone around the school. We have identified suitable locations where pupils may be dropped off before and collected after school (see Travel Plan). If it is unavoidable to drop off, we ask that you consider the residents by not blocking driveways, not stopping close to junctions and not parking on pavements. We especially ask that you do not use Tebourba Drive for dropping off as there have been a couple of “near misses” due to inconsiderate parking.

We have adequate storage for bicycles and scooters. We have Junior Road Safety Officers who are responsible for sharing road safety messages, and Travel Ambassadors in each class tasked with recording journeys and issuing badges walk, cycle, scoot or park & stride.

Modeshift STARS

Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. We were awarded Bronze in July 2016 and Silver in July 2017.

Road Safety

We have two Junior Road Safety Officers, one from Year 5 and one from Year 6.  They each form teams to spread road safety messages to the pupils by giving talks, running competitions, putting up posters on the dedicated notice board and using any other ideas that they develop.

Each October, a Year 5 pupil attends the Annual Road Safety Conference organised by Hampshire County Council returning as the school’s Junior Road Safety Officer. They form a team to spread road safety messages to the pupils by giving talks, running competitions, putting up posters and using any other ideas that they develop. In both 2013 and 2015, the teams won the Regional Championships and were selected to compete at the Champion of Champions at Hampshire Fire and Safety Headquarters at Eastleigh.
