Central to the successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London were the government’s wide-ranging legacy commitments. These included the aim of re-energising school sport, with a focus on competition and creating a sporting habit for life in young people. Schools with primary-age pupils receive an additional ‘PE and sport premium’, which must be spent on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of all pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. Examples of how this funding may be used include:
At Alverstoke Junior School we understand the importance of all pupils partaking in high quality PE lessons and extra-curricular sports. Our allocated sports premium money helps us to do this. As a school we receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil each year.
