Science Club

Science club met for our first session last week and we kicked off with home-made Lava Lamps!

The children were very excited to make their own version and were very inquisitive about how they worked.

As Ollie in 6S explained “Water is denser than oil so it sinks to the bottom and the oil stays on top.”

These are quite simple to make and the instructions are included below in case anyone wants to try this at home!

You will need:

  • A clear plastic bottle

Oil – any type (we used cooking oil but wondered if baby oil would have been better as it has no colour!)

Food colouring

Alka-seltzer (or any effervescent tablet)

  1. Fill the bottle just under half way with water
  2. Fill the rest of the bottle with oil
  3. Wait for the water and oil to separate
  4. Add a few drops of food colouring
  5. Allow the colouring to sink to the bottom
  6. Drop in the tablets and see the magic happen!

We look forward to our next exciting Science club meet – watch this space for more about what we investigate next time!
